Silicon Wafers Are a Growth Industry
Despite factors that could cause short-term fluctuations, the semiconductor silicon wafer market is expected to grow in the medium to long term with the semiconductor market’s growth on the back of an increase in data communication volume, development of generative AI technology, progress in driverless driving, technological innovation such as digital transformation (DX), and the spread of HEVs and EVs.

The SUMCO Group, based on the SUMCO Vision, has endeavored to maintain its high market share in leading-edge products through technology development, aimed at meeting customer needs for higher precision and making distinctive products, while seeking also to become more cost competitive such as by using AI to raise productivity. The Group, for its mainstay of products, 300 mm wafers, will focus on technology development and investment in sophistication or refinement to meet the demand related to the rapid growth of AI. Given that semiconductor silicon wafers are part of business areas with a volatile market environment, the Group will continue making efforts to enhance cost competitiveness and improve profitability, as well as working on building business foundations that can promptly and effectively optimize management resources responding to changes in the demand environment. As for wafers of 200 mm or smaller, the Group will reorganize an appropriate production system that is commensurate with the market environment.
SUMCO's Strengths
Among the key processes for manufacturing semiconductor silicon wafers are monocrystal pulling, wafer processing, and specialized processing. SUMCO has state-of-the-art technologies for each of these processes and is among the top companies globally in the number of patents obtained.

- Leading-edge logic semiconductors are used in servers, personal computers, smartphones, and other devices as high-performance CPUs (central processing units, the “brains” doing the computing). Capable of processing huge amounts of data at high speed, these semiconductors have become indispensable in building the foundations for industrial and technical innovation.
- SUMCO is a leading player in this field, with a global share of more than 50 percent.

For leading-edge memory chips
- Leading-edge memory semiconductors are used for storing data in servers, personal computers, smartphones, and other devices. As the amount of data communications traffic continues to increase, memory semiconductors play an important role in the race to solve social issues with technology.
- SUMCO provides wafers for leading-edge memory semiconductors, including those with a stacked structure.

For Power/Analog semiconductors
- Power semiconductors, used in EVs, solar and wind power generation, and energy-efficient consumer electronics and industrial equipment, are essential for the prevention of global warming.
- By developing crystals for 300 mm leading-edge wafers, SUMCO is supporting advances in power semiconductors.
